These bright-red flowers grow wild throughout Europe, brightening the fields and roadsides. It's a medium to tall, erect or spreading plant with very bristly stems, and hairy sepals. The seed capluses are rounded and hairless, with a flattened top.

Flower. Up to 45 mm across, with 4 overlapping petals, the 2 broadest ones behind.

Leaves. Deeply lobed, 15 cm or more long.

Habitat. Roadsides, grain fields, olive groves and cultivated ground.
