Fontvieille is a small town 10 km northeast of Arles, at the western end of the Alpilles mountain chain. It's an active little town for its inhabitants and interesting for visitors, with a number of well-known sites nearby.
The center of town is the Carrefour de la Poste, with terrace cafés, restaurants and the normal village shops. The old village center is also quite interesting for wandering and discovering ancient doorways, pretty little houses, and frequent descriptive panels describing the locals (in multi languages).
Lavoir
A walk out to the northwest part of town takes you to the 14th-century Tours des Abbes and the very long, 19th-century lavoir.
Moulin de Daudet
A walk out to the south takes you to the old Moulin de Daudet (Daudet's windmill), and a loop back through the woods you can visit the Château de Montauban where Daudet often stayed.
Olive Oil Mills
The entire area around Fontvieille and nearby Maussane-les-Alpilles is full of olive orchards, many of them very large. Driving around here you'll pass several olive oil mills, many open for visitors and direct sales.
