Purple Gromwell
Buglossoides purpurocaerulea Fr: Grémil Bleu Pourpre
A hairy, erect, unbranched perennial. Ours were growing in the midst of tall grass in an open woodland, 50 cm tall.
Flowers. Mar-June
Flower. Flowers reddish-purple changing to deep, dark blue ("starts red; opens blue"), 5-lobed funnel-shaped, the terminal leafy cymes elongating in fruit.
Leaves. Lanceolate to narrow-elliptical, long-pointed, dark green.
Habitat. Woodland margins, scrub, hedges.
Pod. Nutlets white, shiny.
