This is a hairy annual or biennial, often red or bronze flushed, very similar to the Herb Robert (Geranium robertianum), but with an aromatic smell, smaller flowers and yellow pollen. The petals are usually not notched.
Variants of the Latin name are Geranium purpureum and Geranium robertianum subsp. purpureum.

Habitat. Damp, usually shaded habitats, rocks, often in the maquis; occasionally along hedgerows or walls.
