This tall yellow flower grows abundantly throughout the region. The flowers are tiny, but grow in dense clusters on top of the leafy stems.

Flowers. Apr-July

Flower. The tiny yellow flowers grow in large clusters.

Leaves. The basal leaves are ovals with long stalks. The stem leaves are narrower and stalkless.

Habitat. Dry and rocky ground.

Practical. Woad was cultivated during the Middle Ages for indigotine, a blue dye that's produced by crushing the stems and leaves. Even earlier, the Greeks and Romans used woad for medicinal purposes.
