Garéoult

Garéoult is a plain little town in the western Var, south of Brignoles. It's essentially a residential town in a wide farming valley of the Issole river. • Market day Tue.

This is a nice little place for a visit when you're in the area, and a decent place for a lunch stop. The village has a true heart-of-France lived in feel.

Garéoult has a lot of small fountains and one tall fountain on the Place de la with some interesting sculpted cheribuc-faces [Photo-01].

Many of the village houses are renovated in Provençal colors and others are of natural stone construction.

The village church of Garéoult is the 1884 Saint-Etienne, restored in 1983. On top of the 19th century bell tower is a lovely cylindrical campanile [Photo-05].

A couple of nice old chapels are the Chapelle Saint-Garéoult and the Chapelle Saint-Félix located on a small hill with a source just northwest of the center.

First record, 1017 Guardilis

Gallo-Roman: Remains from the Gallo-Roman era included a necropolis with sarcophagi.

Medieval: Garéoult was a domain of the Viscounts of Marseille, and later that of the Abbey of La Celle.

Dining

We saw three places to eat in the center of the village, none of them "high end". Pizzeria Chez Zazou and restaurant Saveurs d'Asie are side-by-side on a side street. We had lunch in the Snack-Café Chez Corinne et Jo on the main street; a lovely lunch, good service and chatty customers were a nice surprise after the innocuous little entry.

Also in the village is the larger Auberge St Médard.
