Dead Nettle
Lamium garganicum Fr: Lamier du Mont Gargano
Deadnettles strongly resemble the infamous stinging nettles, but they have prominent flowers, and they don't sting. The Large Red Deadnettle is a spreading, hair perennial, growing to about 1 meter tall.
Flowers. Feb-Aug
Flower. Pink to purple, with darker reddish marks; sometimes all white; 24-40 cm long. The corolla has a straight tube, much longer than the calyx.
Leaves. Heart-shaped ovals with toothed edges, like the stinging nettle.
Habitat. Rocky ground and open scrub. Our photos are from the damp, shady banks of the Brague, between Biot and Valbonne.
