Provence, the land of sunshine, is also a land of sundials. The richness of Provencal sundials, as it turns out, is only a segment of the heritage of sundials in France.
There are over 1,100 sundials listed for the Provence Alpes Côte-d'Azur region, and over 9,000 in France. Central Paris has well over a hundred sundials. We have one authoritative book (Cadrans Solaires de Paris; Andrée Gotteland, Georges Camus) that lists 109. We've photographed only about twenty of them so far, out of the two or three hundred sundials in our photo collection.
The numbers are approximate, of course, counting the sundials known to exist still, dating from the 18th to the 20th century..
