The city of Paris is bounded by the Périphérique, the ring-road that circles the center. Within the Périphérique, Paris is divided into 20 arrondissements; these are the principle indicators of a location in Paris; the main part of any Parisien address.

For anyone who's spent a few days in Paris, even years ago, those "in the know", or those who've read stories about Paris, an arrondissement number evokes an image: the 5th, left-bank; the 6th, St-Germain and Luxembourg; the 16th, wealth and "class".
In France, the first two digits of the postal "zip" code indicate the number of the département. For Paris, the departement is 75, and the final two numbers of the code indicate the arrondissement. Thus 75005 means: Paris, 5th arrondissement.
Paris has a mayor. And each arrondissement has its own mayor (maire d'arrondissement) and and city hall (mairie). This has, of course, only accademic interest to us as tourists. It's more useful to us to get familiar with the principle sites and places of interest in each arrondissement.
