The "standard" roadmap for France is the Michelin map. The maps show cities, towns, villages, and many interesting sites, such a windmills, lookout points, major hiking trails. The maps are useful for cyclists, truck drivers and house trailers, since gradients and low underpasses are clearly shown. Relief is shown with shadowing, and wooded areas are shown in green, so the maps give good perspective.

Michelin maps are available directly via Amazon.COM.
On Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.fr, Michelin maps are available from individual sellers only.

Michelin Map No. 527: Provence, Alpes, French Riviera, Cote d'Azur

Scale 1:200,000. From Arles and Avignon in the west, past Marseille, Aix-en-Provence to Cannes, Nice and Monaco; and north to Digne-les-Bains, Gap and Briançon.

Michelin France Atlas Roadmaps

The Michelin Atlas of France is a book of detailed 1 : 200'000 scale maps for all of France. Layed out in grids, it's easy to move from one map-page to another. Excellent detail, a good index, and it includes many town maps. Produced annually, it now includes the location of the fixed radars along the roads.
Although we like having a large map folded out across the table (or the front of the car) to explore the area around us, having this Atlas means we don't have to carry a large box of maps with us all the time.

Map Scale

A map of France, covering the whole country, would have a map scale of 1 : 1'000'000 (1 cm = 10 km).
• Scale 1:200'000 (1 cm = 2 km) is standard for an area map or regional map. This is the best scale for normal driving or exploring (good balance between area and detail, and easy to convert centimeters to kilometers). The 1cm=2km is the sacle used for decades, first for the Michelin "yellow"area maps that covered all of France in a grid of rectangles, and now for the 500-series maps (527 - Provence, Alpes, French Riviera, Cote d'Azur; 526 - Languedoc Roussillon, for example).
• Scale 1:250'000 (1 cm = 2.75 km): this unfortunate scale is used for the misguided new Regional maps. These new Regional maps are based on the limited official Regions rather than the similar but larger areas of the 500-series maps (described above). And trying to calculate 1 cm = 2.75 cm is not instinctive.
• Scale 1:100'000 (1 cm = 1 km) is used the Michelin "Green" maps, for the French Riviera (#115), the Var (#114), and Montpellier-Marseille (#113). These better detail than the standard area maps; useful for more extensive exploration and discovery, ideal for cycling, and a good backup for hiking. We keep copies of these in the house, the car and our various backpacks.
• Scale 1:25'000 is a detailed IGN hiking map, produced byFrance's National Geographic Institute. We very strongly recommend these IGN maps for for serious hiking and off-the-road exploring. For visiting a town or village, as well, the 1:25k IGN maps shows the nearby mills, "Roman" bridges and other interesting little sites that don't make the guidebooks.
